Default White's XLT users - is this normal?

I just bought a used White's Spectrum XLT and am trying to figure out if it's working right or not.

With my old Classic I SL, if I throw a coin on the ground and detect it, I get a very clear, solid signal.

But with my new (used) XLT, if I do the same thing, I get a signal, but it doesn't "latch on" very well. I'm just using the Coins presetting. The signal is the same tone as the "hum" in the background, just louder. It doesn't seem quite high enough in pitch.

Is this normal for an XLT? I could post a sound clip or video if needed.

It does not sound right to me. When you put a coin on the ground and swing your coil over it about 4 inches up from it your tones should be clear and repeatable in the preset coin mode. Try a few different coins and let us know what happens.

Sounds like your in pinpoint or allmetal mode. Are you getting a depth reading on the SignaGraph or a VDI ? Check your toggle switch to be sure it's in center position disc mode. The toggles are durable but sometimes can go bad or be damaged. Just a thought, good luck . HH Bill

Thanks guys. I think it's ok because I watched the video that came with it and the signal sounds like the one in the video. I went out yesterday and found some coins with it too.

Glad you figured out the signal response. Just read the manual and watch the video and dig a lot of targets to get the hang of what the XLT is telling you. Good Luck with it. HH Bill

I have read the manual a thousand times and some of the stuff just don't make sense. Then I bought for $2.00 the engineer report for the XLT and they explain everything in detail. Each mode, every sound, and give you everything you need to understand in full your detector. Hope this helps.
