Default Need Help!

Hey I am new to the forum and have just bought an XLT second hand. So far it is a great machine, but I cant seem to get it to pick up deep objects. I have done air test and it seems that it doesnt read deeper than 6in's. I have read over the manual but I seem to be more confused now the before. I checked the coin setting and everything matches page 50 in the manual. I just dont understand which option I need to adjust to get more depth. If anyone has some advise please post. My house was built in the 30's and I have found several mercs, wheats, and buffalo nickles but no Quarters. I have a feeling that they are here but I just cant reach them. All items were found at or around 4.5-6 in's. Thanks for your help.

i use a program when there's little trash in the area. it goes really deep and gets the good stuff. ive found coins at 7-8 inches with a decent signal.

this program might not suit new detectorists well, so if you just want to increase depth, turning up pre amp gain and the a.c. sensitivity would be the way to go. but, if you know what your doing try this program out and you could really find some good stuff.

if you have a problem with the program or installing it, let me know via pm or this thread, ill try to help you out.

Hello and welcome to TQ. I have an XLT and find that you are correct for the most part but have found a few things at 9-10 inches deep. Pinpointing was my problem and I now have that down. If there are quarters in the yard I do believe that the XLT will nab them it is a great coin machine and quite accurate. Good luck and happy hunting.:grinningelf:

If you have found nickels and dimes at 6 or 7 inches that is more than likely the depth that all finds of that type will be ,,I know thats true for this area .

including quarters ,,

one of the things you can do is do a test garden ,,be sure and mark your plantings so they do not get lost ,, but plant some coins in the ground and experiment with the settings .

Put the coins in anywhere from 2 to 10 inches deep ,,leave them there for awhile(minmum for two weeks but the longer the better) before trying the machine ,, the longer the target is in the ground the bigger the halo effect and the deeper you will be able to pick up a signal from them .

This will help you with your pro settings and also get you used to the how the machine reacts to the soil with different settings .

Hello BlackBetty,

Since your new to the XLT i wouldn't recommend any fancy programming changes at this point as they will most likely add to the confusion. If you don't understand what your changing and why, you may not be able to properly compensate to your particular site challenges.

In my opinion the XLT responds better with low discrimination programs and my personal favorite is the basic Relic program with just a few changes such as

Increasing A.C. Sens until detector becomes unstable with coil held at waist level then lower AC until you regain stability with coil still held out to waist level. Now lower coil to the ground and make sure detector remains stable.
Once you feel the AC is ok and stable the Pre Amp can be adjusted in small increments and this may be more difficult to determine when it's set too high but you will encounter more overload responses when Pre Amp is set too high. Always Air and Ground Balance everytime you change a Pre Amp setting. I usually go through the air and ground balance sequence after hunting for a while depending how bad the ground conditions are.

Tone ID and using the 5.3 coil can be a great help when hunting trashy sites using the lower discrimination programs.

There are some other easy methods to hit on deeper targets without making lots of changes such as turning Modulation "off" or using "mixed mode" which allows you to utilize the deeper slow motion All Metal mode followed by the motion discrimination. Mixed mode will work best in areas with less modern trash and targets tend to be deeper. The XLT can easily be enhanced but without an understanding of the basics it can cause a bit of frustration.Be patient and the XLT will reward you. Good Luck. HH Bill
