Welcome to TQ. I use an XLT and have a 5 1/2 hot head coil that I use every now and then. That would be for trashy areas. I belive the bigger coils would give you deeper finds, but you would be way down. 10 or 12 inches or so. I am sure that there will be more that some others can add on to. Happy Hunting...Buster....

Hi isleepu,
Depth is relative to what your looking for and from what i understand most coils over 12" are mainly for hunting larger targets as they are less sensitive to coin sized objects. Jimmy Sierra has a 12" Hot Shot coil and Whites has a Blue Max 15". I've never used anthing larger than a 10" coil on any detector so can't help with larger coil opinions. Experience with the XLT or any detector is the best method to find deeper targets as coils can only do so much without a thorough understanding of the detector. Program choices and facet changes can either enhance or deteriorate depth and target masking. What type targets are you mainly interested in hunting and how long have you been using an XLT ? thanks for the warm welcome... I am new to the XLT, although not to metal detecting... I have been away from the hobby for about 10 years while completing school... I will mainly use the XLT for coin hunting with a small amount of jewelry, and potentially civil war relics at some point in the future... I see these 5-6 in coils for trashy areas, but do they read deeper than the standard coil? I guess this is more of a curiosity question, I know that I need to master the XLT with the standard coil before I start thinking about something different...

The small coils generally show deeper readings than a stock coil on similar sized targets and it's just a mental adjustment.I don't feel you need to learn on the 950 coil especially if your hunting very trashy sites. A Royal 800 (8") or 5.3 Bullseye coil may be better right off the bat. If scanning large areas or working places with little trash the 950 is great.
Hypothetical Hunt... Your in a very heavy trashy area with a 950 coil using the Factory Coin program and yes your picking up some shallow quarters and dimes etc. but all the trash targets are being nulled by the high discrimination settings in that program and (masking) good targets close by, compare to driving a car in heavy fog. Same scenario but using a 5.3 coil more targets are revealed. Now switch to the default Coin@Jewelry program NO facet changes using the 5.3 coil and and more targets both good and bad are revealed due to less discrimination. For even more Fun try using the Relic program and just activate Tone ID at a trashy site using the 5.3 or 350 snooper coil just kidding. My favorite program is Relic even though mostly a coin hunter. The big problems in my opinion result from making too many changes to programs or using internet programs and not understanding what or why your making those changes. Love using the XLT and hope you do to. Good Luck. HH Bill |

I am not sure about the coils I have the XLT with a 10 inch coil. Just a few suggestions to help. I found that when I:reindeer: first started with the I wanted to learn the relic program it offer the least discrimination and responds to almost all types of metal. Except nails and somestainless steel. I learned alot more about the VDI scale and was able to learn the different tones. I have dug items anywhere from of course less than an inch up to about 10 inches, Also using headphones has help with deeper find with fainter tones. I do use the other preset programs and thank to Buster some custom programs. I know you will love the XLT it is a great machine for a variety of hunts. Good luck.
