Hi Anne,
That's incredible. Congradulations on that find.
Were you able to keep that hoard or did the government take it all?
It's my understanding they like to have a hand on the coins first then sometimes give some back to the people who found them.

Also, were you able to ID any of them?

Thankyou,
Doug

Hi Bill,
As far as authentication, it's really knowing people and doing your homework.
There isn't the opportunity to meet most of these guys in person.
Only when you really get to be on terms do you meet these guys in person.
I have been e-mailed many times by people wanting me to buy hoards of coins, swords, etc. I usually pass them up. Only buy if they spend time over months and many conversations and I contact others to see the person is known.
Even this I have been burned a couple times.
Spent 2,000 once on some coins from Spain. A known source. He sent me trash a dissappeared. My loss.

Like the guy who is selling this hoard, I know him and talked to him on phone and e-mail.
I trust him.

The price really is kind of high for that era. if I did my math correct that comes out to about 23.00 per coins. So these coins are most likely really nice and will fetch a decent price per coin sold individually.
Constantinian coins fairly cheap. nice individual coins can be purchased for only a few dollars. In bulk nice coins can be bought really cheap.
These particular coins being sold are bronze with a thin silver coating with a patina.

The confederate silver will probably be worth more per coin than the ancient.
It all depends on the type of coin found.

Best of luck on your hunt for those coins.
I'm also reading about some caches of coins and hope someday to find them.

Doug

happy huntin yall

Hi KellycoChick,
I don't if there is a story behind it. Maybe somewhere.
This is just the seller. Not every find gets a story.
But it would be interesting to know the story.

Hi Anne, Thanks for the info. I will have to check that out. I think it would be such a rush to find something close to 2000 years old. Thats why I love uncleaned ancient coins. It's the closest I can get to finding something ancient without digging it myself. One day I will make to Europe.
