Coin shops- what's in a coin junk box
On occasion I go to the coin shops and buy a few coins from the junk box. These are boxes of coins that they don't want to attribute mainly for the reason the coins aren't worth much or their time identifying them.
I'll buy them and set them aside for a later time to ID.
It's nice on a rainy day.
This coin I bought for $10 about,I guess, 5 years ago or so. I look at once or twice a year and thought I would go ahead put a proper ID to it.
Couldn't find it. Thought this was unusual as it would be common at first glance. The only place I could find it was on a large ancient coin forum.
Turns this is an ancient coin fake. There are only 3 known examples. From what I understand. One in Paris and one other in the UK. Third I don't know.
And this ID came from one of the top guys in teh ancient coin business. Highly respected.
Style is close to real, but questioned. But the give away is this. The reverse type was only used for Faustina II not on coins of Julia Domna. Great since I collect Faustina II.
And the obverse legend is off. Although mistakes were made on authentic coins.
ob: IVLIA V AVGVSTA
buts of Julia Domna
re: MATRI MAGNAE
Cybele seated left with two lions and tympanum
On Julia Domna coins Cybele is seated right
size: 30.5mm
weight: 19.9 grams
Worth a fair amount, not sure exactly how much as their isn't much to compare it to.
But heck of a find.
