You are probably describing a Portuguese 5 escudos, catalog number KM 591. On the obverse is a two-masted latin rigged caravel. The Pinta, one of the ships in Columbus' fleet may have been of this type. The legend REPUBLICA PORTUGUESA means Poruguese Republic. The reverse is the state coat of arms of Portugal, five shield placed in a cross, each with five besants (heraldic coins) in a border of heraldic castles.
