Unhappy Disappointing

I researched this site from 1876 maps where there was an old school and church. I talked to the land owner and got permission to search and a general idea where to search. Well, when I got there it was a briar patch with vines everywhere. This time of year is an ideal time to hunt because the weeds and foliage aren't fully developed, but this place was already a jungle. I could not swing the coil but a few inches and then instant tangle. After 4 hours of torture I gave up. I did find some things that led me to believe I was in the right spot, but not the old coins I was hoping for. I found a wheatie (1942) go figure.......I did find an ornate decorative metal piece of some type that is interesting. I think I will have to be desperate to go back there.

Default Awwww

That's really too bad that you couldn't manuever. I wonder if the landowner would let you do some pruning/mulching. I would bet there is a treasure trove of stuff under that brush.

I had something that was very close to your ornate curved piece. It was on a (armwaw) if that is how you spell it. That is a what we called a hall monster that was in our home. It had a mirror on it and a seat that flipped up for storage. There were 2 fancy hooks on each side where people would hang up their coats. It stood around 6 1/2 feet tall and was from the mid to late 1800's. We sold it on Ebay years ago for a tidy sum and if I can find the photos of it I will forward them to you.

I would stick with it... I'm sure there are some good things to come from there.

Hiya Goat...

Right nice pile of ....whatever ya got there...lol...Just yesterday, I did exactly the same thing you did...I went to what used to be my grandfathers farm, where we lived for one year while my Dad built the new house we lived in for 40 years...Anyway...everything was gone...the barn, a couple of sheds, the house...The front lawn was now a forrest, and has been up for sale all these years, and hasn't changed...I thought, this IS the place....Wrong...I spent two hours there and did all I could from breaking my neck...the strange sounds that came from the detector, I could have put to music...But on the way over I passed a HUGE fairground field, that I completely forgot about, spent an hour or so there and dug up these goodies...Not much to write home about, but in the near future, I plan on DE-coining that whole field... ...That farm was definately NO FUN...

Free2Detect:
That ornate piece of metal is from the 1880's or so. So you got the right spot.

Thanks for pinning the date down. I thought it was pretty old.

Looks like you came out pretty good after the frustration.

I don't know if he will let me mow the area down or not. He did mention he ought to bush hog that area after seeing me struggle. He also told me that on his back 40 there are glass shards and some old field stones used in an old foundation. It is a farm field and he has offered to show me the area and allow me to hunt it before it gets plowed and planted again.
