Default Backyard Hunt

Hey Guys, got out after work this evening for an hour found 4 pennies in my back yard. Two were wheat pennies , 1944 and 1957D. I dug two holes that I didn't find anything in. One was for a dime and was supposed to be 7.5" and the other a half dollar and it was supposed to be 6". I thought that I had it pinpointed, could I have missed it in the clumps of dirt? I went over my pile of dirt on both occassions and it didn't show it in my pile. I went over the hole again and it continued to show the object was still there but I was way past the inches it said it would be. The last one I would have contined after but the wife called me for supper. Sure hope it doesn' rain me out this weekend.

Take Care,

300,
What kind of machine do you have? I know sometimes bigger items will be deeper in the ground. I'm not sure that the target depth is always correct. I have found coins at 3" when my depth ID has said 6-1/2" Rule of thumb, you always want to go a little deeper then the target ID says. Who knows maybe your target was in the side wall of your hole. I hope someone can help you out.

My experience with that kind of signal and not finding the item usually indicates something like an aluminum can (soda, sardine, etc) deeper than indicated and often times located slightly out on the wall of the hole that I've dug. I use a Garrett GTAx750 and that's what I've found out with it (I have dug many crushed soda cans, sardine cans, vienna sausage cans, tops from quart oil cans, etc and all of these give great signals and false locations when pin pointed). Hope this helps.

300WTBY...

NC Hunting is RIGHT on the money with his reply to you...I was at the beach the other day and got a couple of great strong signals that read a dime at 2 inches...Turned out to be 2 whole crushed soda cans both times at about 6 or 7 inches deep...

Thanks for the replies. I have a Whites DFX. I'm brand new to this Metal Detecting (only my 3rd time out) and I have been using the Standard Coin Program that comes in the machine. I guess just keep digging and practicing.

Default Just a suggestion

Might want to consider getting a hand held pinpointer/probe. I bought a Vibra Probe and it has cut my hole search time down by more than half. I also use it to help pinpoint shallow targets before digging. No more empty holes. It was well worth the money.

Just a thought. HH

I agree with Coin Hunter about by a pinpointer. I got the Automax V4 for pretty cheap with my MD purchase. I read alot of negative reviews about it, but it has certainly aided in finding my targets and digging up less ground.

These guys are all giving you good information. I have had the same thing happen many times. Usually it is a can or mason jar lid deeper than the indication on the detector. Like Boobie says the depth is based on an object coin size so a big object will be deeper than indicated. Good Luck.
