Hatchet Head Question

Were hatchets used in the CW?
I returned to a site that I recently dug two minnies and found a very corroded hatchet head. I kept it knowing that with all the corrosion and rust that it had to at least be old. It has the blade on one side and the hammer head on the other. I'll post a pic as soon as i can.
