Default Hunted A Turn Of The Century Store

This one made for very different metal detecting, This was an old store that dated back to the turn of the century. I knew the owner and could remember the place in the 1980's, It had a wooden slat porch and inside was wooden boarded floors. This store had been in his family since 1910. Well as the way it went he was robbed in the 1980's and shot and killed the 2 of the robber's. He shut down shop and and it had remained vacant since, Today I noticed it bulldozed. Yet it wasn't grade, Piles of sod, brick's mixed with soil, Some of the dirt piles were 2 feet high. And here I am with my motion detector, It was hard swinging the coil on the uneven dirt, I hit the slopes of the pile's and area's that were flat. First find was a 59 Quarter, It was gray and sticking out of the soil. Then a real old ornate brass bell, Old glass jar, two marble's, These were surface find's, Then a glass bottle stopper, Couple piece's of pottery and a two buttons, Wheat's were, 1919-S, two 44-D's, 46, Then I dug a real old screw type of ladle spoon, couple of small copper piece's, Then two GODD FOR 5 C IN TRADE tokens with 3676 on reverse, What appears to be a beaded sterling bracelet, An old eagle button with EXCELSIOR under the eagle, Small copper button with a goat on it and writting to small to read, A 1923-S Merc, Then I got a solid dollar reading and I think I dug up a pope, Please help me identify JOHANNES XXIII PAULUS VI PONT. MAX The other side read's LA PIETA BY MICHELANGELO ROMA, Then another merc It's a beauty 1919-D Look's like an AU + to me. What a day Enjoy the PICS and help id the pope medal please.

Default Great!

Very nice finds coinhead.

I suspect that the medal is a commemorative for Popes John 23rd and Pius 6th. John served from 1958-1963, Pius served after him from 1963-1978. On the reverse, the Pieta is one of Michaelangelo's most famous works, it is a marble statue in the Vatican in Rome and his only signed work, completed in 1499. Not sure if the medal itself is from Rome but it might be.

Joe PA

You beat me to it! I was going to post the same. Both where Popes:
  1. Blessed John XXIII (1958-63)
  2. Paul VI (1963-78)
