Very nice finds coinhead.
I suspect that the medal is a commemorative for Popes John 23rd and Pius 6th. John served from 1958-1963, Pius served after him from 1963-1978. On the reverse, the Pieta is one of Michaelangelo's most famous works, it is a marble statue in the Vatican in Rome and his only signed work, completed in 1499. Not sure if the medal itself is from Rome but it might be. -Joe |
