Was picking through the $2.50 in change found around the bus stop near the neighborhood school. Noticed one of the Lincoln cents was dated 1981. That is certainly not unusual. The fact that it has a "S" mint mark is. This one is apparrently from a busted up Proof set. The coin was circulated until it was dropped at the bus stop. A faint amount of proof luster remains and the strike on the coin is very sharp.
I don't find many proof coins. I pulled a 1970-S dime from a ball field about 2 years ago. About 10 years before that it was 4 or 5 proof coins under some brush along with the remains of the 8 or 9 torn apart proof set holders (someone had stolen the sets and ripped them open in the bushes...dropping the 4 or 5 coins I found). Now, if I can only happen upon that dropped 1895 Proof silver dollar... ![]() |
