When you are hunting in a Civil War era site, watch for "iron" signals. I have dug spent cartridges at over 18" with my old Whites Eagle II (yes it is the first series Sn: 000062) and they were reading 95 on my meter which is IRON. This was caused by the "halo" from the square iron piece in the bottom of the cartridge that served as the anvil for the firing pin to set off the primer. The iron "halo" was strong enough to be picked up while the brass cartridge had little if any signal at that depth. Mineralization was minimal and the soil was sandy and moist, so I was able to run the sensitivity wide open.
