Default Info on this money

Hello there this is not a MD find but I would like some info on this. These are a few things that my mother inlaw had laying around and I just thought I would see if anyone had any info on this dollar and these coins.

Due to the file size I am hosting the pictures on my site. Dial up may take a moment.

On a side note it is kind of sad. I remember my grandma had some real old money. I was very young when I saw it but I think it kind of looked like normal money but the sizes where way different. The sad part is that I think someone in my family stole it latter and my grandma has passed away. When would that money may have been from?

My mom and dad have a few silver certificate 1 dollar bills, i asked why they said silver certificates, they said the government backed them with silver(not in the dollar it self) something about it being worth a certian amount of silver even if the valve of the dollar dropped, i don't know if this is correct, I dont know about the coins, hope this helps

Hey, I did not even notice the silver part of that. Wonder what would happen if I walked into a bank and said "OK, where's my silver?" hehe

I'm coming out of lurking to answer identify one of your coins. The first coin (that says Balboa on it) is a Panamanian dime. Panama uses the US dollar as its official currency, an apparent result of the close relationship our two countries had while the US controlled the canal. Panama doesn't currently print its own paper currency (uses only US greenbacks), but it does mint coins equivalent in size and value to our penny, nickel, dime, quarter, and half dollar. I don't know if they have a dollar coin.

If you aren't too attached to it, try it in a vending machine. Panamanian vending machines take both US and Panamanian coins. Lots of US coins are also in circulation there. Once when I was desperate, I sacrificed one of my Panamanian quarters to the laundry machine in my old apartment in Phoenix, AZ. Worked just fine.

I like the Silver Certificate. I remember seeing them printed for a specific bank in my home town. Pretty cool to see your own home town city printed on currency. Very neat items.

Default A couple of answers about some of your change...

The balboa is actually Panamanian...I have a few of those from my tour of duty down there, and the 20 Pence is British its equal to about 25 cents US. I have a lot of those also. Did a tour of duty in Scotland in the early 90's. I do not recognize the 1889, not familiar with the silver dollar either.
The balboa is actually worth the same as the us equivalent. Its a one for one exchange. The Panamanian government uses American dollars for everything. They just happened to make a few of there own coins. They also have a 1 Balboa piece, which is equal to 1 dollar, its hheavey and similar to a silver dollar.

On closer inspection I have noticed the 1889 is a US nickel. But if anyone has further information on this that would be great. Thank you to everyone who has replied so far.

Oh and information on the "silver" dollar is as follows.

"
Silver and gold standards

From 1792, when the Mint Act was passed, the dollar was pegged to silver and gold at 371.25 grains of silver, 24.75 grains of gold (15:1 ratio). 1834 saw a shift in the gold standard to 23.2 grains, followed by a slight adjustment to 23.22 grains in 1838 (16:1 ratio).
In 1862, paper money was issued without the backing of precious metals, due to the Civil War. Silver and gold coins continued to be issued and in 1878 the link between paper money and coins was reinstated.
In 1900, the bimetallic standard was abandoned and the dollar was defined as 23.22 grains of gold. Silver coins continued to be issued for circulation until 1964, when all silver was removed from dimes and quarters, and the half dollar was reduced to 40% silver. Silver half dollars were last issued for circulation in 1969.
Gold coins were withdrawn in 1933 and the gold standard was changed to 13.71 grains, equivalent to setting the price of 1 troy ounce of gold at $35. This standard persisted until 1968. Between 1968 and 1975, a variety of pegs to gold were put in place. 1975 saw the U.S. dollar freely float on currency markets."

Not sure what that means for value but it is interesting I thought.

Oh and if your wondering howmany of these you would need to get 1 oz. of silver..1oz = 437.5

Default The 20 Pence coin is British and I would guess that it dates to the 1980's

Just based on the image of Queen Elizabeth the II,

Cheers,

BDA
