Default two 2 cent pieces

a few years back i was treasure hunting in utica,ny only because i have family that lives there...anyway i was younger and didnt have a metal detector but i always had my eye to the ground...i saw a strange looking rock in a rock wall so i moved it to see if something was under it{i've always heard stories}under the rock was the same strange looking rock, it didnt look like the rest of the rocks in the wall.....so i moved the second rock, under that rock there was a nasty rotten what was left of a wooden box....in the box was a small tin{which turned out to be sliver!!!}inside the 'tin' box was two 2 cent coins one from 1864 and the other from 1865, they are both in very good condition...anybody have a clue of value? if pics needed let me know.....

You sure have my interest piqued. I'd LOVE to see pictures. Did you take photos of the wood box and silver box? What a great story. Thanks for sharing.

Default Two-Cent Pieces

First of all some things need to be determined about the two-cent pieces that you found.

The 1864 were produced with a Small Motto and a Large Motto.

In Good Condition the Small Motto would be worth about $60.00+

In Good Condition the Large Motto would be worth about $10.00+

The 1865 in Good Condition would be worth about $10.00+

The 1864 with the Small Motto in Fine Condition would be worth about $110.00+

The 1864 with the Large Motto in Fine Condition would be worth about $19.00+

You need to have your coins graded becasue the better they are the more they are worth.

The Two-Cent Pieces were a Very short lived coins (1864-1873) and all were made of Bronze. The Designer of the coins was James Longacre who did most of the mints designing at that time.
The coin is 95% Copper and 5% Zinc. The diameter of the coin is 23mm.

Default Utica, NY???

While in college I worked in the Utica Club Brewery -Tour Guide and 'Chief Tester.' I live in New Hartford, awesome places to hunt in Utica, tons of old houses and parks. Welcome to the forum btw.

Very nice!!! I love the photos. It really looks like a little time machine. Makes me wonder how it ended up there. That's the kind of thing we all dream of.
