Went to the town hall in the town adjacent from where I live. I asked the selectman's assistant if I could have permission to scan the grounds of the schools in town. She told me not a problem, and thanked me for checking in prior to going. She also told me if someone asked me what I'm doing to give her name, and tell them she authorized it. I thanked her, and told her I'd take extra care, and it would be like I was never there, except I would take any trash out I find, especially things on the ground that may cause an injury to a child. I also told her if I found anything of historical significance, I'd be back to see her, and give it to her. The most important thing is I made a friend. I asked her if I could use her as a refernce for other towns in the future, if I take excceingly good care of the grounds, and leave them in better condition as to when I found them. It was hot today, about 94 degrees, so my hunt was not a long one. I made sure I picked up everything on the school grounds I possibly could find, not just stuff I dug. It was an elemantary school. I love digging in thos small playgrounds with wood chips as a base. Coins get lost so easily in there it is amazing. Most don't even require digging. I was there for perhaps an hour and 15 minutes. I got all clad. 17 pennies,4 nickels,17 dimes, and 5 quarters. When I finished, I stopped at the ice-cream stand which is close to the town hall. I didn't get anything for me, but bought her a hot fudge sundae. It was hot so I quickly went back to her office, and told her I just wanted to thank her for being so kind. I handed her the sundae and she was amazed, and gave me a big smiling thank you. She asked me what I found, and I showed her the coins, and the big bag of garbage I picked up. I pointed out some of the sharp things, and told her, hopefully I saved a kid from having a playground accident next year! She thanked me again. I asked if I could use her name in some of the neighboring towns, she said absolutely, if they have any questions just have them call me. Do you think I'm going to have any trouble detecting in that town, as things come up, that may be very enticing? Guess who is going to get the permission? That is what I'm trying to establish. One, that metal detectorists are very considerate people, and two establish a face-to-face relationship with town officials, that allow me to offer them as a reference, knowing I'm thoughtful, and considerate to the property I detect. So I found 43 coins, of little value, but I think I hit the jackpot in human relations! Just some ideas to give you, so in the future, you can set your own path of goodwill, it will get you to be able to detect, where perhaps others are not allowed!
