Default A total mind blowing find!

I went to an elementary school today, a few towns away from where I live. It was a beautiful sunny day, temp in the mid 70s. I was detecting around, and up came the usual clad, perhaps, 45 coins in all, so excited, haven't even counted yet. I get a signal that spots up at about 7", and started to dig. After a few minutes of work, up came this old looking coin. I forgot my glasses, so I couldn't see it, but noticed a Liberty front, and immediately wondered if I had found a Liberty seated quarter, and if I was finally going to break into the 1800s coin-wise. I put a regular quarter next to it, and noticed it was a bit larger than the quarter, and started thinking with my luck, it is just some foreign coin. I dug a bit more, and up came a partial musket ball, and my heart started racing, as I flashed back to the array of musket balls I recently found. Now I'm thinking, gee, maybe that is an old coin, and I began thinking musket balls, and revolution, and was I in another area, that was going to produce. There were lots of kids activities going on, so I decided to terminate my search, with the excitement of returning to perhaps get into something good, not realizing what I had in my pocket already. I couldn't wait to get home and see what I found, thinking it wasn't going to be anything good, as to not get my hopes up. I arrive home, and take out my magnifier, and penlite, and I see the word Hibernia in letters across the top of the coin, and the date 1723! I'm thinking, no way, it can't be that old, and looked again. Sure enough it was true! I still didn't even know what it was, because my oldest coin is an 1856 flying eagle penny. I googled 1723 U.S. coins, and there was a picture of a Hibernia Colonial Half Penny! I was now the proud owner of one! Never in my life did I ever think I would find a coin even close to that old, as my best to date was a 1919 penny. I'm still in disbelief! Gotta love this hobby! Can't wait to go back now.

Default Wow. 284 Years old!! Congrats are in store for ya!

The title just about says it all... I think I would have had a heart attack finding a coin that old..

You know the saying though, where you found one.....

I never really thought about early USA coinage.. Guess I need to brush up it so I will know what was what!!

Congratulations on such a unique find and be glad you didn't have your glasses with you!! You might have dug up the entire area in your excitement if you knew what you had found then.. I know I probably would have tried.. Plus, you always can go back!!

James

Coil! You absolutely MUST post a photo for us. I bet some of the members will be able to give you an estimate of the worth. At least somewhere close...

It is not in great shape, but the date is readable. I will try to get a photo up, of this and my cache of musket balls. I'm still glowing, can't believe I found this!

That is awesome and you were just saying how you would rather find coins than musket balls and here you found both. Maybe you should be kind to your musket balls they seem to be your good luck charm.

Shaweet ! Is it silver or copper ? Copper has two types,1723(23 over 22) & 1723 normal date.Very good condition.$80 (23 over 22) $50 for the normal date. These are red book prices witch tend to be a bit high.
