Default Military Button?

Hi all, I'm new here to the forums and have a find that I cannot identify and was hoping to get some input on it.

This is some type of button I found while looking through a very old barn on a farm in Southeast Virginia. The farm has been in use as far back as the 1820's from what I was told.

It looks very similar to some of the Confederate Civil War buttons I've seen online but I've been unable to find a match.

The button is bordered by stars with an eagle clutching an anchor and what appears to be a paper scroll. It has a long pin attached as you can see from the pics so it's not a conventional button. Anybody seen one like this?

I found one on ebay but it's a little different on the back. I think I have a cuff-link from a union naval uniform and not a button. It's smaller than a normal button and has the cufflink type pin attached.

I actually didn't find it with a metal detector, I pulled up some loose floor boards from the barn floor and just started digging through the fine dust that had accumulated under the floor and there it was. It was about 3 inches down in the fine powder like dirt.

The farm is located near the Elizabeth river which was used heavily by both union & confederate ships. Right up the river from the farm is where the famous ironclad battle of the monitor and merrimack occured.

It is either a cufflink or a naval cap button...The cap button attached to the cap in the same manner as a cufflink attached to the shirt. I'm still looking for one as an example....

Default No expert here..

but in my experience any type of button of that nature, where the eagle and anchor are present together, usually has ties to the Navy or Marines. Nice find!
