Default Last night's finds . . . . and a couple questions

I was able to get out last night for an hour or so and did pretty well - at least for me. Started out getting a little frustrated - kept finding pull tabs, garbage, and not much else. But lo and behold, the coins started coming. I ended up with 4 quarters, 1 dime, and 2 pennies - all Clad - nothing too old....maybe - here's where the questions come in. The dime I found was 1967 and feels a little different than normal. Is that around the time when they quit using silver to make dimes? Did I actually FINALLY find some silver? Oh, and at one point, I found a quarter and was excited, replaced the sod and thought I'd run the detector back over it and it went off again. I remembered somebody talking about the halo effect or something so I was going to walk on but I thought I should check again, so I lifted the sod and voila - there was the quarter again - same shade and everything. I thought I had dropped it back in or something on accident but I checked my pocket and I didn't. I checked that area again and found a penny as well - so in one small hole, I found 51 cents. I thought that was cool.
And finally - I used my new Fiskar's Digging Knife that I got at Wal-Mart this weekend for $10 and let me just tell ya - It's Awesome!!!!! So much easier digging with that thing - cuts through roots, allows me to slice right under the grass so I can lay the sod back easily - definitely makes everything a lot easier than the cheap $1 hand shovel/trowel thing I was using that broke.
And finally - how do you all deal with insensitive people who think they're funny and give you a hard time while you're detecting in public? There was this guy with his girlfriend and dog and and a friend of there's I guess who just hung around a little too long and he's making comments about how I need to get a life, I must be broke and looking for spare change, and things like that. I had my headphones on so I basically ignored him and acted like I couldn't hear. But then his dog started digging around the ground and he practically yells "Hey - look buddy - you're just like the crazy metal detector guy digging a hole!" It was all I could do not to go over and do some extremely unfriendly things to him to say the least.
I guess I shouldn't let it bother me but it's hard enough trying to learn my detector and figure out how to properly use it without having a heckler bugging me also. Any advice besides just trying to ignore it?
Thanks everyone - sorry for the extra long post!
Paul

Default Heckler

Just for the fun of it...ASK him how many diamond rings he finds a week...THAT should shut him up !

Silver went out in 1965.

Cool

I've gotten some wierd comments and such from the occasional heckler too. If s/he moves on all's good, sometimes s/he stops and I'll offer my detector to them and ask if they want to try it, especially if they're alone. They either go OK or move on. Might spark an interest and find out they always wanted to try it out but were afraid to ask. I let them keep what they find, if anything. They especially like finding clad. Free money. Either way is ok with me.

Thanks
Leo

A good day is when I find 1 coin. Especially if I am learning what that coin sounded like and what the trash sounded like. If we keep on trying we will be finding silver and gold and older coins you can bet. Keep on huntin and have fun!

I think ignoring people like that is best. But... a comment like the one about the diamond rings is a nice comeback. Karma will bite them on the tooshie, they will lose something one day and probably think of you. Happy hunting.

Nice hunt. As far as the silver, hang in there, it will come, at least that is what I keep telling myself. lol! It will come! I would just ignore those comments, probably someone who wanted to detect, but never had the guts to ask someone to teach him. Fortunately for me, I have not had to experience that yet, or at least I have not heard anyone do it to me. The best thing is having the kids and some grown ups follow you around the parks to see what you find. Always a lot of fun and always very inquisitive.

I'm sure you're not the only person that guy has ever chosen to pick on. I bet he even beats his dog. Probably the dog was saying to you, "PLEASE TAKE ME WITH YOU!!!" I wouldn't dignify any of his comments. It probably made him more angry that you didn't answer or acknowledge his presence. I think you did the right thing. If he had a brain, he would know that the equipment would cost too much for a homeless person to just find loose change.

Congrats on your successful hunt, I say successful because you found something besides trash. And anytime you find more than one coin in the same hole we like to call that a "pocket spill" Good Luck on your next Treasure Hunt

Don't let it bother you. I had a neighbor walk up to the fence of the school yard and ask me how many of the poor kids pennies have I found. I said $185 and a 5 diamond gold ring. I told him I donate the money back to the school for repairs on the kids play things but if no one claims the ring its mine. It looked like he shrunk up half his size walking back to his house.
