Default Une Pièce française

Well today after work I picked up the children from my parents and decided to drive around the local park to see what activities were taking place. The park was rather empty, but I did manage to spot another detectorist hitting the grounds. Well, since my son came down with a fever today I was unable to stop at that time, so I brought him home and my daughter and I went back to the park to metal detect. I wanted to make sure I took advantage of the dry weather since it was supposed to be a washed out day today. When I got back to the park the guy was still out there swinging his White's DFX. My daughter and I decided to hit another spot of the park. As soon as I got onto the grounds I got a very week signal, but one that showed up as coins do. I wound up digging 10 - 11 inches and was still getting the week signal with the Minelab SE. I called my daughter over since she had the Ace 250 with the sniper coil. I put the coil in the hole and it was showing a signal another 8"+ deep!!! After 45 minutes of digging I finally gave up! If there is a coin in that spot, it has to be at LEAST 18" deep! I can only dream what it could be - however I am planning on going back with a mini shovel to really dig some depth! The guy walked up and talked to us. We were both happy to see that there are others locally into the hobby. I don't know why I didn't think of giving him my contact information for future hunts.

Well, after covering that hole back up and pressing on to find a lot of clad coins, I wound up having a few kids follow me to every hole I dug to see what I would find next. I was kind to them and even though they were too young to go out and buy a metal detector, I showed them how much fun it was to find things. I am hoping one day these kids will become future metal detectorists as well. One of my targets was within an inch down and when I retrieved it I thought I found a token of some sort. It wound up being a 1984 French coin - 10 Francs. I was somewhat suprised to find this foreign coin here, but I was happy nonetheless. The coin is thicker than any of our clad coinage and I was suprised of the weight of it as well. Does anyone know the conversion factor of 10 Francs to our currency? I also believe France converted to the Euro a few years ago.

I am enjoying this hobby more and more. I am glad to see others locally also enjoying this hobby as well.

Nice find! Last time I was in France (1998) the franc was going about 7 franc per dollar..probably just enough to get a pint in the local tavern there. Congrats!
