Default Breakfast at Tiffany’s & Dinner at East Side Cafe

Since I work four 10-hr. days, I have Fridays off, and this past Friday morning I decided to go hunt for jewelry at some sand volleyball courts. I wasn’t having much luck at all, and after a while I saw a guy with his dog kindof walking around aimlessly, and shortly thereafter he walked up to me and we started chit-chatting.

He’d asked me how much were detectors, etc., and I thought he was just curious. He then said he’d lost his wedding ring the day before, and he was looking for it, and asked me if I wouldn’t mind helping him. I told him absolutely, and he then showed me where he was and where he could’ve lost the ring.

He’s a soccer player, and was pretty certain he’d lost it playing the night before. Well, the area he showed me was, well... about the size of a soccer field. Needle in a haystack, but oh well, stranger things have happened. I wasn’t finding anything anyway, and the fields out there have a decent amount of clad, so it wouldn’t be too much of a chore. He even handed me some clad he’d eyeballed and said “I wish I had more for ya.”

So after a few questions - mainly what is the ring made of (14K white gold) and what does it look like, I started hunting. Ok, so, I have a whole soccer field to search, so I figured if it’s here, I’ll find it - so I started at one end and started my grid. I made about a quarter of the field, found a handful of clad, but no wedding ring. So, I’m hunting, and digging up pulltab after pulltab, kindof zoning out, and I get another signal - I’m thinkin another coin, and probe around with my screwdriver. I hit something and pry it up, and damned if it isn’t a pretty lil’ ring! I quickly figured out it wasn’t his ring, but it was a nice one - not too big, but very heavy, and mostly gold. The inscrpition says TIFFANY & CO. 750 PT950. Kick @$$! Shortly after that my girlfriend called with some errands, so I packed up.

I get back to the spot Saturday morning and continue hunting from the spot where I had stopped (I had marked it). The dewey grass made it easy for me to see where I’d been, and I hunted really hard for about 3 hrs straight, taking breaks to cool off and drink some water, as it is very hot and humid in Texas right now. I had come back from a break and was starting to get that tingly feeling that you get when you start to get too hot, and I was getting a little light-headed getting up from retrieving, so I decided to abandon my strict grid search and just wander around for a few minutes in the area I had not hunted yet, and then go home.

I had told myself earlier that if I do walk over that ring it would probably blow my headphones off, seeing as it was most likely still above-ground. So, I started wandering around in the higher grass, since the guy had said he hadn’t looked in the higher grass too much, and it wasn’t even 15 minutes and BLAM - I got a hit that did just about knock my headphones off. I look down, and I see something shiny in the tall grass. I reach down, and damned if it isn’t his ring! I knew immediately that it was has, since he’d described it as having a “hammered” finish, and the 14K on the inside closed the case!

I then hauled it to my truck and called him - I told him “Where do you want me to meet you, cause I found it!” He said, “Dude are you eff’ing kidding me?!?” So he meets me there about 20 mins later, and he was very, very happy and appreciative, and I was ecstatic - it was one of the best moments I’ve had since I’ve been detecting.

He said his wife is the manager at a cafe in town and he told me dinner was on them!

So, please, if you have the chance to help someone out, please do - there’s nothing like the feeling of giving somebody back something that they though they’ed never see again.

And thanks for reading this novel! I'll add a pic of the other ring sometime today.

Robert
