Default Something I found a long time ago

(This is also posted under Ask Pappy)

I found this a long time ago at the train depot I used to hunt... It's about 2 1/2" high, and the eagle part is made of sterling (marked on back)...

I am guessing its an emblem from some sort of military hat, possibly a ships captain's hat...

If anyone knows anything about what this might be, please let me know... thanks!

---------
UPDATE: I have found that it may be related to the Army Transportation Corps in some way...

Default Think I may have found the answer!

Got this email this morning:

Subject: RE: Information request (UNCLASSIFIED)

Classification: UNCLASSIFIED
Caveats: NONE

Rich - Bill Emerson's book - "Encyclopedia of United States Army
Insignia and Uniforms", pub 1996, shows this device on page 344,
Figures 36-35 and 36-36. The device the owner found is incomplete
in that the crossed anchors have either been broken off or cut off.
Basically it is a US Navy officer's cap device with and Army officer's
TC insignia attached to it.
These were supposed to have a red shield
but war time expediancy meant most did not.

These were introduced in August 1945.
