Default Old Fairground Research

Hey, dudes, my brother and I have been doing some research lately. Before I recount what we had narrowed down, I want to state that we have become inspired by DFX-Larry's fairground that a few of the members have been hunting lately. I do remember "Keith" stating that the site was hunted before, but some of you guys have found some awesome coins still...if I am correct, around 200? Wow, what a site!

Now, let me get to what my brother and I have just "found" out. We were studying some maps of a certain area, when we came across a mentioning of a "Fairground." This information was gleaned from an early-1900s topo map.

Then, since there was a map of this area in 1858, we decided to look over that one to glean some more info on this site. Well, let me just state, this fairground was being used in 1858! If you look closely, you can see the outline of the trotting area in the fairground.

After studying the maps, we had one more action to conduct...we needed to check out the aerial photos of this site. Well, as you will be able to see, the fairground is no longer being used. It looks to be a planted field, maybe soybean or corn.

We are totally ecstatic about this site! We will be seeking permission for this field in the fall. Since we have the Colonial tavern to hit also in the fall, we will seek permission for this site as well. On Sat., we will hit the old fairground and on Sunday, we will detect the tavern. From the looks of it, the harvest season is looking "bright, really bright."

From our research of the fairground site, we definitely know that it at least was being used in 1858 until 1922. It may have lasted longer than 1922, but we don't know.

Stay tuned-in for some more detecting adventures in the near future.

I like this thread - it shows how one goes about doing research in search for older coins. The use of old topographical maps along with maps from the era of your research gives you an "eye" on activities from the past. Then you combine that with a modern map to see what the site looks like today.

I sure do hope you get permission to hunt this site - it definately looks promising. Good luck!

Yes indeed!!! Good luck on that site. I have also been doing some similar research on a old local horse racing site. Currently there is a closed down tire plant built on most of it but some portions are just grown up areas now. Happy hunting.

Oh mY!

Believe me..if this hasn't been hunted before (which would surpise the heck out of me) you guys are in for a treat!

I've hunted an old fairgrounds that ended in 1911. I alone have found over 50 indian heads, v nickels, sitting and barber dimes and one 1853 half dime. Another guy has found over 300 coins!!!!

Please keep us updated!
