Default so far so good.....

I have a hundred year old house in the suburbs of Illinois.Been doing more research than hunting ,but have found several sites that I will hit near home. One interesting site is a very old tavern.Maybe 1860's.There is a bar there now(which will be great to spend my finds there)and it is in a residential area with a modern highway-however accross the street is a pretty undisturbed area with a creek running through it.The creek is on maps from the time of the original tavern-so-hopeful #1.

The second is a county forest preserve nearby in crete. It is located near a indian encampment/french trading post.I found this information from a local historical society. This dates pre 1800's.Unlike the east coast, illinois was mostly prarie and to find the remote areas people congregated is hard to find-this will be my most likely 2nd hunt.

The third is a state park that was originally one of the first settlements in the area complete with a 1800 era cemetary.Abeautiful spot-however theres a sign right at the entrance that says "no metal detecting" so obviously, theres probably something there.Historically it is both a ghost town and a Indian site. But I fish there and will look for off the state park areas that look promising.

I mean-hey-the research is half the fun.And on a rainy day you can MD in your mind.I cant wait to get out there.

Finds around the house?
Many old nails-some square
couple of pennies-oldest-1953
matchbox milk truck -found on internet circa 1953-made in england
old golf club head
aluminum tag for a "lawncomb" (rake) circa 1920-made by the american fork and hoe company (also described on internet)
old bicycle bell

many holes in my yard-so I just plant flowers in them.

more to come and good luck to all

Hunting around old houses (with permission) is great fun. You never know what is in the ground around them. Take it from an owner of a 125 yr old house. Found this old coin in the front yard the second day I started metal detecting with my first machine a bounty hunter Pioneer EX. It hard to read the date but it is 1856 Large cent.

...aint that the truth, but no thanks. My mind is full of junk, and I don't like to keep digging it up .

Good Luck with that trading post site. Lots of potential there.

Sounds like you are on the right track. Don't get discouraged if you don't find anything right away. I am learning that the type of research you are doing is key to the better finds. Keep on hunting.
