Default for me it averages...

something like this fired minnie' 4.5 to 7 inches unless they hit a rock or tree. droped,tree hits and most buckshot is from the surface to around 3.5. i have found fired bullets in turkey scratches so i am guessing they were not deep. when i look around a blown ammo dump they r from the surface to 8 + deep. 4 inches + is a good average for me at the local skirmish sites.
i guess the terrain has alot to do with it here.a piece of lead case shot can go deeper.
