Default Im about due............

After much research ,I finally got out and MD'd some great sites. In Thorton,Ill ,established 1834, I found a forest preserve/picnic grove that was used as a picnic area in 1874.Found from the historical society website that this area had a side track by the railroad.Trains coming out of Chicago used to bring people out from the city for day-picnics-used to park the train on the side track and wait there all day to bring the people back. So when I got there it looked promising.Stone markers-like obilisks -marked the street names in the general neighborhood. There were some very old flagstone borders outlining the picnic area.I mapquested an airiel view, walked the path as if I were getting off that train in 1874.Found a dime in the middle of the field-was very excited-year? 1987
Found a melted chunk of what appeared to be lead or steel-very heavy, found the top of a lighter.Learned how to calibrate my detector for coins only after finding several old nails-left frustrated after 30 mosquito bites.

Went home and MD'd my 100 year old house in the yard. After calibrating found 5 pennies-1952 oldest.1 dime-1967 and then my heart skipped a beat-found this great coin-large-unknown inscriptions-brought it in ..told my wife-I found someting-probably my first old coin-really excited -I started washing off the dirt...................1999 chucky cheese token-"where a kid can be a kid"..ugh.Found 1 old key.

I guess Im about due.Probably not many gold reales in the midwest-so Im not expecting much-but please Oh mighty GOD of the MD universe-can I get a flippin wheatie already??

Thanks to all that keep posting great finds here-it keeps me huntin.Otherwise Ide put that MD in my golf bag and use it as a putter.

Goin to a ghost town turned subdivision tonight-my fingers are crossed,Ive got my lucky keychain and Ive sacrificed a rubber chicken...so I keep ya all posted

I would go back there once you really learn your machine. There's got to be some stuff there, but it's going to be deep. Don't give up! You'll find some good stuff there.

I detected everyday for months and never found a coin older than 1973 on a never hunted early 1800s site. I just never knew I needed to sacrifice a rubber chicken. I will get right on that, there is one in the dog's toy box.

Default Good luck!

OK, now I know where I am going wrong. I thought I was supposed to sacrifice a rubber duckie! I would also like to discover wheaties or mercury dimes, even just a few.
Good job researching - hope it pays off for you.
As a suggestion, I saw in another thread a lot of info on searching the grass strips between the street and sidewalk. We don't have many sidewalks in California, and where we do the development isn't that old and/or the concrete goes all the way to the curb. Maybe you have some of those in your area?
Gotta go get a rubber chicken.

Spend the time with your machine in those good areas, and as you learn what the darn thing's telling you, you'll find the good stuff!
