Thought it was a shield....
I was hunting the home of one of the secretaries that I work with. The home is a twin, over 100 years old, in the older downtown area. This home has never been hunted to our knowledge so I had high hopes for older coins.
My 3rd signal I dug looked like a shield nickel but I didn't dare rub it. after about 2 hours of hunting she told me dirt had been added to the back yard years ago so I wasn't as excited about hunting it as I had initially been. 3hours later, going home I was still excited about the "shield" as I hadn't found much else except a 1942 wheat. Well after cleaning the coin with some soap and water at home I found a British "New Penny" dated 1971. Boy was I ever disappointed.
All told I had 26 clad coins, mostly pennies, my new penny, an 1982 dog tag which belonged to a dog owned by the homeowner and one old spoon that I am attempting to clean. I gave her back the dogtag already and will give her the spoon as well. A good hunt even though I didn't have what I hoped for.
