Default Kids and Klad!

Had just a couple of hours to get out today - so, I just hit my little swim beach at the lake down the road from me...I figured since it was a weekday, and a bit cooler than ususal that the beach would be fairly quiet - and it was - no one around but me, quiet, peaceful...until three vans filled with 4 and 5 year olds from a pre-school in Castle Rock showed up for a picnic...

When they saw me with a metal detector - they were on me like a pack of dogs on a three-legged cat! "Watcha doin?"..."Didja find anything?"..."How much did that cost?"...and a bunch of other questions asked faster than I could answer!

Finally, I stopped and gave a basic "class" on how the machine worked, showed them how to read the icons, etc. About 10-12 followed me for an hour and everytime I got a tone - they would dive into the sand and begin scooping out a hole with their bare hands...I found 4 or 5 clad coins during this point and let whoever retrieved the coin keep it (after I checked for silver)...so, even though it wasn't quite the hunt I'd planned - I had a great time! Ended the day with 32 cents, a sinker, a thingamabob - and a headache...but came home happy!

Seems like the good time out wieghed the headache. When kids followed me I took them by a tree and let them dig and they found a metal ring from around the tree and then told them to run home and put a metal detector on their christmas list.

I agree, I think what you did was commendable, as well as spreading your passion for this great hobby.

So do you have a meeting place in mind for your new MD club?

Got to love those kids! They are so interested in what is happening. I had about 20 of them following me around today. It was pretty awesome, asking questions, everytime I had a tone, they would start diggin with any thing they could find to dig with. Wonderful sight!

I always think it's cool for about 5 minutes, then I realize that my peaceful day I've been planning for weeks is slipping through my fingers. I've had to leave a few places because sometimes the really young ones will try to STOMP on my coil. At least you didn't have to dig, eh? hehehe

That's pretty cool that you gave them a class. I bet they'll never forget the day they learned that you can still dig stuff up when you're a grown up.
