Default Follow advice-it pays.......

I saw some recent posts on MDing in the grass parkways between the sidewalk and street.I live in a hundred year old house in Illinois. So when I read a new tip,Im lucky enough to walk out my front door and give it a swing. In 7 digs I found 9 coins.1916,1933,1950 wheat, various 70's pennies and 2 65' quarters.I maybe detected for half an hour.

In the past month I had only found 1 wheat which I wondered if Ide ever find, along with various nails, and other more recent coinage. Now I cant wait to get out and hit the whole neighborhood. My neighbors have been very curious towards my early evening digs and I think asking permission will be an easy sell. Now I await my first silver and first gold.Ahhh-to be a kid again. This is fun............

Good luck to all

It's great that Oz and Mauthe (I assume) inspired you to look around the sidewalks. Obviously, it worked out for you and it sure is convenient!

I have been trying those spots at the old house I hunt but no luck so far. Maybe soon though. SO glad you thought to look there.

Well congrats on the sidewalk strips!! That is some real good finds.

I really would like to give this a try. Not many sidewalks around here. The ones that are in town are in the big $$ side.

Has anybody had issues with landowners "claiming" this "public" property as their own? I do not want to upset anybody, Beale.

Denverjoe and I had one guy who insisted on raising hell about us hunting the grass strips in his neighborhood...after DJ initially explained that the city owned those areas...he kept circling the block and giving us dirty looks - until I told him that if he really felt we were breaking the law to go ahead and call the police - and I'd wait until they arrived to settle the issue...he declined to call the police, and DJ and I made sure that we did not dig on HIS sidewalk strip - and moved on. Also, in areas where the homeowner had taken the time and expense to actually landscape the sidewalk grass area - we skipped those areas as well.

Default courtesy is the best option

I have found in all my MDing that most battles are best forgot.Theres an aweful lot of places to MD,and if my activity upsets someone-I wouldnt even get confrontational siting the law,I just move on.The sidewalk strips, public or not,are maintained(or are supposed to be) by the homeowner,Sometimes when digging plugs during drought season, the grass dies off and leaves a spot-unless your willing to come back everyday for a week and water. I am a MDer and might not like someone MDing my yard without asking. One thing I will do when MDing someone elses property is watch the weather channel-MD a few days before a rain, then carry a pouch of grass seed to throw down around the edges of my plug.Usually in 3 days or so-you would never know the ground had been disturbed. Most plugs are instantaniously fixed-but when its dry summer months-you just never know-and I love it when people invite me back.
This may also be why I love beach hunting so much.
