I would say there's silver everywhere, just need to search the older areas.

Default Thanks

This may be a stupid question but Do you actually ask people to search their property or do you find abandonded homes. Being so new at this I feel kind of funny asking....

Bukkdigger,
Well....not yet So far I am just sticking with people I know, but that's bound run out after this year. I don't know how your county is set up, but here we can go to our county Auditor website, do a property search by name or address and get info on the house. I have been checking everyone I know/met who lives in my town and started with them. Eventually I will have to break down and start asking. I dread that time because believe it or not sometimes you get weird responses even from your friends, I can only imagine that would increase when you start asking strangers. I will probably start a post about asking permission, see what these seasoned vets do....

JC - went out for two hours last night to the same 1947 house, picked up another 12 coins, which included two wheat and a 1950 rosie (16th silver coin) and a silver belt buckle. Like you that makes about 12 in the last two months for me (only about 16 hours of hunting)

Ben

Talking Took your advice Ohio

Had my eye on a vacant home with a rather large lot right across the old train depot yard I hunt. Havnt checked with the city yet to find out when it was built, but I am guessing late 30's 40's. Spent one hour there this morning and found some clad, all 1970's lots of more recent hot wheel type cars (bout 12 so far). Detector was beeping all over the lot, I simply did not have the time. Can't wait to get back.
P.S. I did find this.

Hang ten silver, got a small stamp inside looks like 975....
I was exited

Awesome, Silver Baby!!!! that's a start. Find out the age, and work the front real good, and if there's a grass area between the drive and the entry point of the house. try to imagine how someone would lose change. pulling keys from my pocket to get in the car, sitting next to a shade tree, etc...

Keep in mind that even vacant homes belong to someone, I would especially try to get permission before hunting them. Check with the neighbors first to see if they know who owns them, they may be the ones keeping an eye on the property and can give you permission. Years ago when I was a kid about 16 or so, we went to explore an old vacant home that was rumored to be "haunted" Now, I'm not sure if it was the owners or not, but a car pulled into the lane having us blocked in and out came 2 men, one who made it obvious that he was armed. Anyway, we talked our way out of it and never went back.

Thumbs up Neighbors

I did speak with several neighbors at a nearby apt building, (Its about 40 circa too). None had any Idea who owns this lot (home). Would I start with the city or maybe a realtor, to find the owner????

Getting permisiion is the reason I prefer homes that are occupied. But as Minelabman says only hunt with persmission. Another secret I have is I talk with everyone about detecting. I have been helping an old lady get her computer going and last night after I had gone to bed I get a call. My wife hands me the phone and I immediately think, " Uh oh, something still wrong on her PC". But when I start talking to her she tells me she has 2 more homes for me to detect both built in the 1800's. This lady had gotten permission for me but I will confirm with owners before I show up but is that cool or what. It is not the first time a friend or new acquaintance has gotten me a hunt site. And it's a good system because I like to talk so much

JC, that just goes to show that other people really like you! Your passion has them excited, too. That's a great compliment Keep that up and you'll be able to search the front lawn of the White House!!!

I agree with ohiohunter. The library and better yet, hit a historical society meeting. You'll be amazed at the local history, and keep your ears open for " Grove" if you can find an old picnic grove, they are goldmines. A lot of people don't take time to do the research and will hit the obvious places. Good luck.
