Talking Another Ring A Ding Ding!

Today I decided to go for another ring in my collection. I hadn't been to the pier on the Balboa Peninsula in a couple of years and never with a metal detector.
I had to take my new Explorer to the dealer for some warranty repair first. The gear lever selenoid has been acting up and I was afraid of getting stuck in an unfamiliar place unable to put the thing in gear.
I headed out to Balboa Peninsula about 1 PM. I tried a shortcut which put me in a position where I had to make a snap decision between three lanes. I picked the wrong one. After a turn around Balboa Island I ended up at the entry point and went on toward the road I should have used in the first place.
But then the 3 lanes of the coast highway was cut down to 1 lane and a detour. Luckily I lived in that neighborhood some years ago, so I knew the best path through. Finally I arrived at the correct parking lot by the pier on Balboa Peninsula.
This beach is huge! It is 300 steps or more from the "boardwalk" to the water's edge. Looking south from the pier it looks like about 4 miles of beach. Looking north the Balboa beach turns into the Newport beach and finally into Huntington beach. It is probably 10 or 15 miles of uninterrupted beach.
I chose my standard coil and started searching parallel to the water. I used the people at the beach today to figure out where the logical blanket line might be. I went off this path to cover around trash bins and life guard stations (later a couple of volleyball courts). I also looked for places that had been covered by blankets, had holes dug, had sand piled up or any other kind of activity.
About 30 minutes into the hunt I found the ring I hoped for. It is silver with small alternating "diamonds and rubies", I wish. There are 16 of the clear stones and 15 of the red stones. The clear stones have one place with two clear stones together.
I only found one ring today, no other jewelry of any kind. Besides the ring I found 7 quarters, 10 dimes, 5 nickels and 19 pennies.
I lost count of the pull tabs and bottle caps. I was sure every pull tab was going to be a ring.
It could take a lifetime to search this whole beach. I am going to have to take several runs at it to develop a better strategy. I just can't use the process I use at Laguna or any of the other beaches I have hunted. I have barely scratched the surface.
The temperatures should go into the low 80's this weekend. I may go to this beach to observe how it is used on a weekend.
Happy hunting.

His automobile, not a detector. I had to re-read it twice. Couldn't figure out how a detector got stuck in gear...

Congrats on the ring, and the upcoming 80 Degree temps. Its only in the low 50's here in Ohio.......winter coming fast....

Congratulations on the ring John, it's a nice looking ring even with the "diamonds and rubies". Sounds like you'll be spending alot of time on that beach!

Good luck with your truck.
