Default My 1st Post In A While ... And A strange Find

The hot weather and crops in the local fields have kept me and my detector apart since May. Last Sunday I went out to a couple of recently harvested soybean fields for my first hunt of the fall. The first field was the site of an old country store from 1900-1950 long since torn down. Many local detectorists have hunted this spot and it usually provides a nice coin or two. I hunted there for a good hour and came up with a big zero ( the field hasn't been plowed yet and the soybean stubble made for a lot of aggravation). I moved on to field 2 which was the site of an old house (1920-1980's era) now torn down and removed. This site was researched and located by myself and my hunting buddy and we have hunted it maybe 3-4 times with minimal success (a few wheats, roosies, and a couple of mercs). This day I was alone and had only 1 1/2 hours to hunt before dark. I managed to find 1 clad dime, 4 wheat cents in pretty rough shape (one was 1953), a very worn military button, and of all things ... a 1916 silver shilling with a hole in it so it could be used as a necklace. Unfortunately the heads side of the coin is in very bad condition but still a strange find for a soybean field in rural eastern North Carolina!

That looks like a great day of hunting to me! The button is a good find, and the shilling is just fantastic. I am also suprised what comes out of the ground in odd ball places, Beale.

It sure is a strange find but something tells me you need to go back and check some more. JC

Some neat finds. Hard telling how the shilling got there - or when. It was great that you found it though. Hopefully they will get the fields plowed and disced for you to get some good hunting in.
Happy hunting.

Those are some great finds. I bet you can't wait to get back there once the fields are plowed. I am hoping to get into some cotton fields shortly IF I can get permission to go in.
