about this find
From the land of the Bluenose...the brooch was found at the Dingle Park which is what we call it locally. The real name is Sir Stanford Fleming after the Scotish engineer who helped design Canada's railroad. Closer to my heart he also designed our first postage stamp the 3 pence beaver in 1851. (stamp collector here for 40 years ...winter thing along with playing hockey)
Have hunted the dingle all of my 30 years of digging and she still gives up the odd good find. This particular piece was found in a fob along with a set of prayer beads, cross, religious medallion and paper money with only the denomination left of the bills. The path that she was found on goes northwest towards Melville Island (see post of research part of this forum) and was used quite a bit. A little scandall hit Halifax about this path as it leds to a secluded beach that is about 30 feet wide and during one regatta on the Northwest Arm the paddlers observed "skinny dippers". Rather out of the norm for the late 18oo's.
The brooch is silver and with the pin in back gone and is double the size of a Morgan dollar.
