Smile Neat Knife

Today I packed up digging tools and headed for Salt Creek to take on the vegetation again. There are a few kinds of vegetation to deal with. One is a grass that grows along the ground and forms a tangled mat of roots and stems mixed with dirt. Another is a variety of cane (I think) that also grows along the ground and forms another kind of mat with less dirt. The last major variety is ice plant, a succulent weed here in California.
Before I had a small gardening hand shovel that was totally overwhelmed. It couldn't cut the plants and wouldn't pry dirt up without breaking. I decided to bring my Bowie Knife (from Pakistan). It has an extremely hefty blade and is very sharp. It cut plugs quickly and efficiently.
One of the first finds I made was a stainless steel knife (440 alloy) from China that is 6.2 inches from tip to back. This is really a neat knife with respect to metal detecting. I found that most of the coins were near the surface, trapped there by the plants. I would detect and pinpoint with the ACE 250, then use the hand held Bullseye II pinpointer to get an exact location. Then I used my new knife to pry out the coin.
Rarely the target would be beneath the mat of vegetation. All deep cases to day turned out to be aluminum cans.
Along the way I found a heart charm that had the eyelet broken out. It looks like a plated piece.
Then I found an unknown. It is a cylinder with a faceted stone at one end. The stone doesn't look valuable. I can't figure out what the possible use of this item is.
The clad I found included 9 quarters, 11 dimes, 7 nickels and 24 pennies. Definitely another beautiful, sunny day at the beach in California. There were about 20 surfers out there in the early afternoon - and the number rose as school was out. It is even going to be warmer over the weekend. The surf's up.
Hopefully someone out there will contribute a gold ring to the cause!
Happy hunting

Good hunt John. That knife is a nice find for sure. Is it possible that the cylinder is one of those big hole ear lobe ear rings? I dunno I probably am reaching on this, Beale.

Nice looking knife. Looks like it's in good shape. Wonder if it's some kind of "throwing" knife.
