Default Found out in the yard today

Hi everyone,
Today during my lunch break I took my Bounty Hunter out in the yard while my pizza was cooking. In the 20 minutes I was out there, I found a key, frog (maybe brass), and two pennies. I hope this isnt a stupid question, I am new to this, one of the pennies, 1973 showed up as silver on the MD and the other, 1995 showed up as zinc. Why? Thanks for all your help.
~Mike

Not sure on your questions but you can bet someone here will have the answers quick, they're good, you're off to a good start, the backyard is always a good place to start & practice.

Nice hunt! I love the frog

In 1983? they changed the makeup of the penny. It used to be 99.something% copper, now it's 98% zinc or some other high percentage. If you ever notice a newer penny cut in half, you'll see that it's zinc with a very thin coating of copper...the older pennies are the same color all the way through. Newer pennies will corrode a lot easier.

Hope this helps!!!

That's why you'll see posts where members mention the dread "Z-Lincoln" the Z stands for Zinc. Pure junk once they've been in the ocean for a little, then I just call them Bubble Pennies as the copper coating bubbles off when the zinc starts to corrode, looks like the penny has leperousy.

Cheers,

BDA

Since your penny question was answered so I'll just say I like that frog and a great 20 minute hunt!
