Smile Barbados Quarter

As planned, I got up at 5 am this morning to make a run at the dry sand in Laguna Beach before the beach was populated. I haven't been able to check the dry sand later in the day, except for spots. I really wanted to see if I could find a ring.
I didn't find a ring. I gridded the dry sand that is left quickly. I failed to check the tide tables and found the wet sand for the overnight high tide had covered yesterday's blanket line. The hits were few and far between. Besides a few coins (mostly pennies) I found a corkscrew/knife/bottle-opener combination (the 4th of these) that was in brand new condition, a model car (1973 Mustang Mach 1, 1/64) and the remains of a plated earring (only the copper remains).
Because the hunt went so quickly, I decided to try out Aliso Beach. I didn't really expect much. When I got there I saw another MDer at work. I introduced myself and found out the other MDer was Al. He told about a wedding set that had been lost last fall. He has been looking for it when he gets a chance to hunt Aliso. Because I hunt Aliso often, he gave me the approximate location the rings could have been lost and some contact information. There could be a reward, but I declined it (if I find the ring), returning a ring to the owner would be fantastic. I told Al about the Treasure Quest forum and hopefully he will sign on. He wants to find someone in his area to hunt with.
I searched the dry sand and found little besides nails and other iron. It will take forever to get all the iron out of this sand. There is more sand behind some fences that is probably loaded with scrap iron that will be tracked onto the beach as soon as the fence comes down.
I checked out the local tot lot with zero success.
Then I looked at some grass near the tot lot and found some targets. I went back to the car and picked up the Bullseye II and my knife. I was finding mostly pennies with a few nickels and dimes. I decided to hunt the area around one of the parking ticket locations. One of them was in the grass. I started out mostly with pennies but finally got a strange sound. It was almost like a silver coin sound, but with some variation. I could have been my imagination. But when I dug it I found a Barbados twenty five cent coin. It is approximately the same size as a quarter. The Barbados dollar is pegged the US dollar and the conversion is:
1 USD$ = 2 BSD$
After scanning all the grass in the area I went back for a little more dry sand hunting. I only found one target. It turned out to be the bowl and stem from a bong - that had been used to smoke some pretty cheap weed, by the smell of it. That got chucked into the trash immediately. There is a stoner out there with a bong that has no pipe. Hopefully he will take it as a sign.
So the morning hunt yielded 2 quarters, 3 dimes, 5 nickels, 37 pennies, Barbados quarter, 1973 Mustang model car, combo opener, and the copper earring remains.
That was definitely not like the last couple of hunts with large quarter counts - I was concentrating on places where I might find a ring.
I have some unfun work to get done, so I won't be hunting for a few days. But when I do get back to it, I am seriously considering getting a surf capable detector and a wetsuit. I am really curious about what I can find in the water.
Happy hunting

I've thought about that, too, John. I keep looking to see if anyone has any reviews for the new Pirate MD with the controls in the earphones. I never see any hunters in the water...it's too cold out there.

What a great feeling to find a foreign coin. I found one of those Bajan quarters a couple of years ago and I was thrilled too! It makes you wonder how it got there, all the way from Barbados.

Good Finds and decent of you to go on a ring hunt for the lost ring. I hope you find it and are able to make the return.

Cheers,

BDA

Pris,
I have seen a couple in the surf, wading. But I have talked to one serious about water hunting only at Corona Del Mar. He pointed out a rock that is good and a spot where he found 12 gold rings in one outing.
There is a danger by the rock. There is a submerged lobster trap that likes to grab MDers.
I don't know how to figure out where the good stuff would be - and there are a lot of other unknowns. Out here a wetsuit is essential. Brrrrrr!
John
