hey pappy hat pin or medal???

I found this in a creek bed about 250 yards from a civil war skirmish site that sits just off my property.
seems to be pewter and is very detailed altough mother time has really made the details hard to see.
it's 1" and 7/8ths wide and 1" and 3/4 high.it has 7 distinct engravingings making up the top rim looks to be an artillery shell,flower,cannonball,flower,mushroom thingy,cannonball,flower in that order.
the main body is circular with rope edging going around it 360 degrees
the circular part is further engraved with vertical lines(4 total) breaking it up into 5 equal parts.
i can make out a barely legible "8" in the center band perfectly centered.
the back has two broken solder places wear a pin or hook should have been.
any ideas,i have looked long and hard but havent seen anything like it.it reminds me of a military hat insignia.please help. thanks
