Default solid gold with human hair!!

hey guys it appears to be some kind of locket type piece with hair in it..it has dirt in the hair, the hair is inside of a copper bowl inside the gold the copper is green and very brittle there are no marks on the outside of the piece im afraid to take out the hair i dont want the copper to disintegrate, but i wonder if there are marking below them... the back has spots where a pin used to be attached.
This is one find that has made me mad I found it and it was still in a clump of dirt you could see the back and you could tell it was gold my friend walked over to me and i showed him it, I like to leave things in the dirt until i get it home just in case.. and he took it out of my hand and flicked off the dirt into high grass i saw what looked like glass go flying... man did i fume!!!!!!! i searched all in the high grass but could not find what i saw fell im still pretty mad over it..
any advice on what to do with this piece??? how do i keep it preserved?? i dont know what to do and i dont want it to desintegrate now that its in the open air, it was found with many other items all pre 1840 so far so i know its at least that old...hh all jd

It was common practice years ago to carry a lock of a loved one's hair in a locket. Some women would even braid their hair into watch fobs for their husbands and boyfriends to use...this looks like a GREAT find, and I hope you find out more about it!

When we find a Ring or Locket with Hair in it is called a Mourning Ring.......
A piece of hair from a deceased loved one is placed inside the jewellery so they can be kept close by them

That is creepy to me. It is cool, but I wonder the story behind that.

That is a real neat find J.D.
A good way to preserve things is to not let your friend handle it.

This is an INSANELY cool find!!!! I vote for not messing with it at all - but I would keep looking for more in that area. What kind of location were you searching? Old home site?

Perhaps a competent watch repair shop would be able to get a new crystal mounted. Nice find.
