Default Big graphite markers???

Found 7 or 8 of these over the last few years at sidewalk tear-ups. Ring up as a nickel an the Ace - some have a greenish patina so they have been in the ground for quite a few years. I'm guessing they used them to mark off 2 x 4's for the older sidewalk lays back in the 1940's - 1950's. They write quite well on a block of wood so they sure seem to be graphite.
