Found this baby tonight - thought it was another Large Cent until I got some crud off her. Looks to be in not that bad of shape - I believe the year is 1841.
Can anybody give me a little history on these - this is another first for me. And are these just as collectable as coins? I also found a 1836 large cent last night about 10 feet from where I got this tonight.; Thanks alot Davy |

Hi Davy
What you have there is a hard times token, there are alot of different types of these, I do not personally collect them, but they are quite collectable, and are valued according to rarity of the design. I will have to do a little research to try and value yours, i will be working tommorrow morning ,i will see what I can find out in the afternoon. Cool Timmy found it !!! I agree with Timmy do not clean the coin , have it cleaned by a conservator ,I believe that NGC offers that type of service . It is a very sweet find , and the banker says Yesssss ![]() Rick

Your token is listed in the Standard Catalog of United States Tokens 1700-1900 by Russell Rulau. It is indeed a hard times token. it is on page 96 about half way down. HT# 59 in copper. it is called Bushnell fantasy type. Why it dont say. the date is 1841. Nows the part where you sit down. It has a rarity rating of 7 on a scale from 1(common) to 10(unique) third edition 1999 gives a value of $2000 in EF which would be close to yours
DO NOT CLEAN this coin by your self. Hope this helps TimmyNY PS sweet find ![]() Last edited by timmyNY; 06-04-2005 at 05:59 AM. |

So glad you're having such good luck, Timmy!
The Hard Times token is interesting, as it uses a slogan that was at least a generation old... I believe that "Millions for Defence, and not one cent for Tribute!" comes from Jefferson's time. IIRC, Pirates in what is now Lybia were holding Americans hostage, and demanding a ransom. Instead of a shipload of loot, Jefferson sent them the Marines instead! It's a shame that we don't have a govenment today that will just let the Marines do what they need to without interference. Keep up the parade of cool finds! HH! -Tom |

Thanks for all the info guys but I got to come clean - I already gave it a peroxide bath before I even took a picture of it, I thought it was just another Large Cent - it was so caked there was no way of knowing any different.
I did see one on Ebay that was the same year and looked to be in a little better shape than mine and the price was only $4.37 with 3 days left. I guess the right buyer hasn't seen it. Anyway I still think its a pretty cool find. Happy hunting to ya'll Davy |
