Default 1817 Large Cent

I found this in the same yard as the 2 Two cent pieces. I know its a 1817 Large Cent - but can anyone tell me what the "RF" is- or what it means- thats stamped in the libertys cheek? This is the 11'th LC that I've found but the first one that has that RF stamped on it. Thanks for lookin.

Default I looked the web over....

and all I could find was that R.F stood for République Française, or republic of France. These coins were used in French territories and later used in USA during the coin shortage as pennies after the war of 1812.

You will often see "counterstamped" coins offered by token dealers. I'll take a look in my token encyclopedia and see what I can find out.
Great piece!

Did some checking but had no luck finding more information. There were an awful lot of counterstamped coins back then!
Usually done by merchants and/or during coin shortages (as mentioned by others in previous posts). Just hard to pin down a value. Could be anywhere from $20 to $$$$... just depends on attribution by those in the know.

Anyway, it sure is a great find. Congratulations!
