Talking Thought I was going to have to wait!

However I scored on my first silver coin today!! After digging near 60 pennys and two clad dimes, I got another hit on the way back to my car. Right in the middle of the dirt road at 5" out pops a 1942-W Merc.! I danced a right fine jig right there! It's in very good condition too!
Can anyone tell me what the "W" means?

Congrats on your finds! However i have never herd of a w mint mark. a The mint mark is on the opposite side of the coin from the date. The W might be part of the initials of the desginer of the coin Adolph Weiniman< i might not of spelled that right but that is the name.

Rusty I believe you are right. If the W is to the right of his neck... it is the initials of the Designer. Adolph A. Weinmen. The mint mark would be on the reverse side of the coin.

Isn't it the 42 that could be a double die? Or is it the 2 stamped over the 1? Wouldn't that be great if you have one!

You Guys are Good !!! the w is in fact part of the designers initials on the obverse !!

The mint mark if it has one would be at about 7 oclock on the reverse, if it does not have a mint mark it is a philadelphia minted coin.

There is a 42 over 1 variety for this coin !! it is a very obvious variety !

Red face OOoops!

Shows ya what I know about coins!! it's an "S" minted coin. No Dbl. stamp on the date, that would be interesting if it had!
We had a hard frost last night and a temp. of 29* this A.m. guess I got my silver just in time. Detecting season is about over for us Northern folks. So those of you in the warmer climates, stay hard at it so I won't get bored reading the same posts over and over.
Thanks for all your answers to my post!................Gene.......................

The W is from West Point, NY if I'm not mistaken. All the Mercury dimes have it on the observe.
