I thought I'd found a half dollar when I first saw the large round disc....but soon reallized there were far too many words and not enough pictures for it to be a coin.
The brass token I found an hour ago, if from the futuramic 88's inaugaral year, would have been made in 1949...is just a hair bigger than a half dollar, and touts the new Olds with slogans like: "Seeing is Believing" on one side of the medal......and "Driving is Believing" on the other. It's curious that it has a coin reverse rather than a medallic reverse. For those who aren't familiar with those terms....a coin when held between the index finger and thumb....at 12 oclock and 6 o'clock...when rotated to see the other side....will show the other side upside down. Normally on medals....both sides will be the same. This one's like a coin in that respect. There's a ton of text on it....8 items on either side....and my favorite is "rocket quietness".....what the heck does that mean? It's a classic oxymoron...like "meteoric rise", or "military intelligence".... A fun piece of automobilia...that doesn't photograph well with my camera...and in this condition. The second pic is of one of a group of 28 of these currently being offered on eBay. They were found in a lionel train car... Wyatt Last edited by Wyatt Earp; 10-05-2005 at 08:17 PM. |

I found the olds token about a half a mile from that yard. While detecting a pretty nondescript little "point" of land where one road intersects with another....I learned something. The new generation doesn't lose pennies...just dimes and quarters. I don't know how the token got there....but it was about 6 inches down.
While swinging the coil at that place, I was invited by the guy across the road, who was checking his mail, to detect another piece of property. Part of it's been landscaped...but part of it's untouched, and there are some maple trees there in that part of the yard...that have trunks nearly 3 feet in diameter. Took a quick look there.....but there doesn't seem to have been much activity. Found a diecast toy truck...well, 2 pcs of one that obviously got introduced to the lawnmower...and a couple modern dimes very near the surface, but I wasn't there very long. No telling what's there. It's probably nearly 2 acres. Wyatt |
