Well, we are finally getting some much needed rain....I mean there's a couple puddles outside. I haven't seen a puddle since May. Couldn't do a morning quickee hunt today....so I "went to the library".....just reading some stuff on the web this morning and found a great cache(s) story.
This is the stuff that drives us all. I would have died if I'd have found this stuff. It makes my little box of stuff seem so insignificant. If you like early silver coins....don't miss this story. Check this out: http://www.treasurenet.com/westeast/...ots/200304.htm I'm definitely following up on a family cache story this fall....I can't even imagine the feeling....but maybe I'll be lucky and get to experience it....if on a smaller scale. Thanks for the link. What an awesome story! Don't get down because you haven't found a huge treasure. I've got two full seasons into this, and if you look at it materially, I have a gold ring, a couple of crumpled Sterling silver rings, a War nickel, plus about $40.00 in change (the vast majority of it in modern, junk pennies). I make good money (knock on wood), and if I were to invest my spare time doing what I do on the side, I would have some good money for sure. *Maybe* I make 50 cents to a dollar an hour metal detecting. It doesn't even pay for batteries, let alone the gas to get there and back. The important thing, is that the hobby gets me out. It forces me to think where people would be, and I've learned a lot about human nature. I've found some truly spectacular spots, as well as places I don't feel comfortable in unless I'm carrying. Instead of watching the tube (or playing with them [vacuum tubes], I'm out having fun. The fun quotient is right up there, generally about 7 or 8 out of ten most times I go out. On the bright side, with your research and mine, maybe we'll be blessed enough to actually strike it big some day and find that cache of a lifetime, or at least recover some nice items. HH! -Tom |

Oh, I'm not really "down" when I say that.....I have had great fun amassing my own small treasure, and if i found it all in one place.....then it would be a cache.
I love detecting, and have since the 70s....even before detectors had meters or discrimination. I heard another cache story this week. It concerns a pipe filled with half dollars within an hour of my home. I'm going to do some more research into it too. Folks have supposedly looked with detectors....but they've apparently not looked in the right place yet, unless they did and kept their mouths shut...which isn't a bad idea either. Funny thing about it is....if you're not looking for a cache...you're far less apt to find one. It's true that folks just stumble onto them, as Perry and his wife did, and as the guy in Meadeville did, and I feel as though I could get lucky in one place I'm going to detect this fall, but the big caches that folks find....usually are located by those who actively seek them out. I choose to look for lost coins in peoples' yards....and I'm happy to amass my cache that way...but one of these days....I'm going to score a good find. I can just "feel" it. When I do...it'll be because I was looking for it. "It's always the last place you look". Wyatt |

Yep. I agree with you 100%... I'll be hitting the local library at some point, and will wade through the newspaper archives. Maybe some local intrigue will pop up... And, yes, if I do find anything, you can bet I'll keep my mouth shut! It's amazing what happens when a great find is publicized... It brings out the worst in people, and the worst people. For the time being, I'm recovering coins and objects just like you are. HH! -Tom |

It also pays to know about the area you're hunting. Especially if it's listed on the registry of historic places. Even if you make finds of lesser importance in yards...on private property...if the find is made in a section of an old town that's been deemed a "historic district"...the government can take the recovered items from you. It's up to you to keep your mouth shut about any recoveries made on such properties, as in most cases the people who have had their properties listed, don't fully understand what it is they "signed up" for. Don't even clue the property owner in if you find something good. The less people around you who know...the better off you are in those cases.
There is such a section of town here in Greensboro, but none of the yards I've hunted the past couple weeks, have been within that area. If I do hunt any of those yards, I'll never tell. Wyatt |
