I went out this morning rather than trying to go this evening...because I think it's going to rain.....anyway.....I went back to the place that gave me 2 silver roosevelt dimes yesterday and scored 3 more. Nothing to write home about necessarily, but the last one I found...was right beside a hole I'd dug yesterday and pulled the 48 roosie out of. This morning's harvest from "almost" the same hole...was a 50-D roosie. The others were a 61-D and a 63. I also dug 9 more pennies, and just one was a wheatie...a 1941.
To look at the house where I've been finding these dimes....you'd wonder why I would bother to hunt it. It looks too new to yeild anything of interest, but the 5 silver dimes and the 1945 quarter this yard has given up are interesting enough for me....for now. Obsolete coinage is much more fun to dig....but until I get a new spot....I'll take whatever I can get. Wyatt |

And on learning the lesson to re-check a hole after you recover an item.
I can't even begin to count the number of times where I've found several items or coins in the same hole, or right next to it. It's doubly necessary when it's a beach, or athletic area. You might have one coin that's part of an entire pocketfull that got dumped out. I'll do a quick search in a 4 or 5 foot radius around the hole. On my last outing with the kids, my oldest blundered into a pocket full of coins. It was great! Glad to hear you're finding good stuff. I'm not so lucky, but still have a great time. I wonder if your house was built where an old one was, or if there was some other activity there in the past? Maybe it had fill from a park? HH! -Tom |

Hi Tom........It's just a very nondescript house built in the late 50s that is situated among a bunch of erlier homes. I bet a lot of THers just pass these places by when they're with older homes.
I'm starting to look for less obvious places. The ca 1880 eastlake Victorians...have all been hit and hunted to death here. There's no easy big silver left, and even the siver dimes are but a scant few. One of the most obvious places in Carmichaels Pa gave up an 1884 Morgan dollar and an AU 1893 Barber half.....but that was 15 years ago. Things are much tougher now....unless you find places that haven't been hunted. Those places are here....but many times the homes have been updated and barely resemble the original houses. I try and date the house by the foundation. Not much else matters since the foundation was there from the beginning. I'm also getting better at spotting old vs new grass. Keep looking. You'll find a honey hole. Wyatt |
