Default Question pertaining to Gold Coins

I was wondering has anyone found a gold coin? If you have, could you specify what it was, it's year, and where you found it? I am just curious because they are so rare. Thanks.

I haven't found a gold coin....but I am saving my clad......

I have 25% of the funds for an 1878 quarter eagle already....and have accumulated that in about 6 weeks. Nothing wrong with finding clad and buying gold coins with it. Your collection won't take up nearly as much room, and all that clad will never be worth anything greater than face value anyway. I'd rather have a few nice gold coins than a 5 gallon pail of corroded quarters and dimes.

I hope to find a gold coin...yes...but nothing wrong with the other route in the interim.

I can't understand how it is that some of these folks in the hobby can't believe that you can find coins, even outstanding coins......isn't that what we set out to do? I know the forum you're referring to....and I don't post there anymore.

It still doesn't make any sense to be envious. Dahlonega Gold coins were minted...lost...and you found one. I would be happy for anybody who made such a find. I hope you find a coffee can full of them. If you do...we get to see pictures.

I didn't know you were a newbee.....besides...I don't see what that has to do with the price of rice in China anyway...and they'd obviously be just as envious if it were a seasoned veteran THer who made such a find.

I drove past a nice Victorian home today....4 times to be exact...which gave up 6 coronet Double Eagles when the oldsters who owned it died and it changed hands. During the renovation of the buildings and cleaning up the landscaping....some topsoil was brought in from Waynesburg. It's not known if the coins were on the property already....or came from those loads of topsoil.

I wish I'd have been on that job.

hmmm, seems that regular members of T-net can't do a search at their forum anymore. They mention that I needed to become a charter member to do so.

Default Gold Coins

I am not sure about any other metal detectors but my Garrett GTA 350 shows a 20.00 gold coin as being a 50 cent piece. I tested a 10 dollar piece as well and it also registered as a 50 cent piece. My detector basically makes a loud burp over them, so loud it vibrates the handle.

My father found a few gold coins in the 60's and let me "borrow" (Standing over my shoulder) a couple he has to test the readings on my Garrett. He still uses his old D-Tex and it literally screams when it comes across gold.
