Default The "S" is a mint mark!

Hi Rustic!

Congrats on your finds! The "S" on your coin is a mint mark. It tells you what mint the coin was made at.
As a general rule, the "S" mint coins were produced in smaller numbers than "D" or non-marked coins, so you've got a good find!
Mint marks used on the more common coins would be S for San Fransisco, D for Denver (not to be confused with the "D" for Dahlonega, GA. Gold coins only proir to the Civil War), and P for Philadelphia.
A coin without mint marks would be made at Philadelphia. They generally didn't use mint marks until recently (the exception being War Nickels from 1942-1945).
Other mint marks you may run into are: CC for Carson City, NV up to 1893, O for New Orleans up to 1909.
The location for mint marks varies on different coins. Suggest you get the Red Book: "A Guide Book of United States Coins" by R.S. Yeoman, ISBN # 1-58238-202-6. It's a great investment, and will help you get up to speed.

HH! -Tom

Hey Rustic.......After taking a decade away from this hobby.....when I got back into it and went out for my first "all day sucker"....the cheeks of my butt hurt really bad ....which I thought was weird. The next time my hamstrings were sore.....now I can go all day with no pain.

Nice finds...stick with it and you'll get even better results as you get really familiar with your detector.

Wyatt
