Default 1913 King George and 1905 Indian Head

Today (Tuesday) I took my two youngest kids detecting. They found 1.45 in clad and my 4 yr old daughter found a 1913 King George Penny. This is the second King George we have found in Commerce, TX. After we got home my six year old son grabbed my detector and turned it on and was going over the front yard. He got this slight (I barely could hear it ) beep and found the 1905 Indianhead. It was his first Indian Head. Then the mosquito truck came by fogging so we retreated on into the house to try to clean their finds up some.

This was the first real outing four my daughter, Kenzie. My son has hunted before.

Any suggestions on a couple of good kid friendly detectors? Me and momma want both ours back. The two youngest have laid claims on 'em till they get their own. The coins pictured were found with a Garrett Treasure Ace 300 (King George) and a Garrett GTA 350 (the Indian Head).

I developed an interest in numismatics at age 10, when I found some coins in a house slated for demolition. That helped me develop an interest in history...or maybe it was the other way around. At any rate....there are far worse things for youngsters to be interested in. Nice finds...even if you're not a kid. I'd have been happy to dig up either of those, and an Indian head that wasn't totally green....well, that would be a treat here in Pa.

Default Across the street

Across the street from my house is where Commerce, TX school has been located since 1883 (according to the historical marker). The original burned and they built the East Ward School. This was torn down in the early thirties and they built the existing structure in 1936. It is still property of the ISD but not used for school anymore. I believe it is a storage warehouse now. The out buildings are used for special ed and the playground (when A. L. Day was a school) and for the special ed students is about 65 feet off my front porch across the road. We looked at old pictures of the area before our house was built and our lot was used for picnic lunches.

I figure that this is partly why we keep fining Indian Heads in the front yard. Clad pennies do not last very long in this Blackland Clay gumbo. The soil is too acidic. Coppers seem to be a little dark with slight spots of green. Here is the reverse side of those coins. I haven't cleaned them up other than rinsing them off.

I would love to be able to hunt that playground but haven't gotten permission yet.

Default Good luck to your kids!

I started off young(MDing) when I was 9 yrs old(now 46). Just buy Garrett Ace 250 for both of them( I think Pappy got one). Ace 250 I heard got the things your big exspendsive detectors have on them. Or buy Bounty Hunters for them at Wal-Mart.
Good Luck and Happy Hunting.
