Default Research?

I was wondering what kind of research do you all do in the off-season? Do you go to the library and check the old archives out? Since this is my 1st year, I am a little inexperienced. Mr. Silver seems to be finding hundreds of silver and I am just wondering if he is doing research on areas? If you could give me any words of advice; anything will help. Thank you.

Default I use the following research....

Local historical books
Local historic plat books ( my second favorite)
Talking to the elderly ( my favorite)
Internet
Old Newspapers
old postcards
Join the local historical society
Surround yourself with as much history as you can
Use the winter to send letters and gain permission to hunt

Our local geneaological society has 160 rolls of microfilm of old newspapers from our locale. I plan to spend the 20 bucks to join...and read until my eyes bleed....looking for events...one day circus visits and the like. No telling what I might find that way.

Don't get your hopes up....

Reading old newspapers on microfich is something of a chore. You're eyes might be bleeding after your done!

One day circuses....good idea!

Reading can be a chore.....especially if you don't enjoy it. I like to read, and the possibilty of finding some obscure and forgotten site to pluck some choise finds from...will keep me interested. My biggest problem will be the 12 mile trip to get to the place in the winter.

I love reading Wyatt. The problem is is that the print on old newspapers is very small and in on a microfiche screen they become somewhat blurry.

It is a very taxing thing to do. Make sure you rest your eyes often so you don't have a huge headache when your done.

I see.......or maybe I won't be able to when I'm done. There has to be information there that is unobtainable by any other means though. I'll let you know how it goes....

Good luck!! Let me know if you get any good leads.

I'm not sure where you live but have you ever tried locating old ball diamonds?

In my area all of the small towns had a ball team in the 1920's. I've found some nice stuff sitting in the middle of a now farm field. Ask the elderly where they were.

I found one old ball diamond....but it had been graded and hunted awfully hard. There have got to be others....and I'll do some talking with our seniors this winter.

I am going to be hunting the location of a one room schoolhouse that was taken down in the 1960's....and that's how I found out about that place. It's grown up, and it's not necessarily a place that hasn't been hunted....but it'll be worth a look-see.
