That sounds like a gross halloween story. I haven't been out since I found the old driver's license pin.....because I had just about worked those yards to death....so tonight I decided to go knock on a door and ask who owned the lot across the street where an old house had been torn down a few years ago.....and when the woman answered the door....I knew her, if casually. She allowed that I was welcome to detect in her yard. The home is a frame 2 story of late 1800s vintage.
Anyway.........I ground balanced my detector and within the first 5 minutes of hunting I hit a high dime signal. The depth read about 4 1/2 inches, so I started to dig. The ground was very hard, and I decided that the hard ground and the high VDI reading might be silver, so I was careful. In a minute or so I was rewarded with my first silver of the night...a 1920 Merc....pretty worn, but with a Denver mint mark. About 5 minutes later, and maybe 5 feet from that one, I hit upon a similar signal, and again the depth was about 4 1/2".....and with a little more digging in this hard ground, out pops a 1925 merc...a little bit less worn, and also minted in Denver. That was it for silver for the evening, but I was sportin' a big grin. I spent the next 2 hours digging 5 clad quarters, 8 clad dimes, one recent nickel, and 34 pennies....and this st christopher "elongated penny". This yard will get more attention for sure. There's an old clothes line...and I never even made it to that side of the yard tonight....perhaps more silver is waiting. It was fun....as always. Wyatt |

I think the st christopher medal might have been an indian head because the VDI was about 52-55.....and lincolns come in about 60 or thereabouts. No other way to ascertain the age, but it was deeper than the dimes.....at about 6 inches.
There's lots more shallow stuff in that yard....and it might be masking some good stuff. Wyatt |

I was thinking maybe I'd have someone bury a 3 ringer...then I could say I dug one of those. I've only ever dug 2 round balls...both 45 caliber...one fired and one dropped. Someday I'll decide to look for relics. Coins are more my thing and always have been. I do need to find older places that haven't been hunted though. Those 2 mercs were probably lost in the 1960's, judging by the amount of wear.

So glad you had a good day's digging!
Congrats on the mercs! The ground is getting better here is SW WA now that we're back into the rainy season. The concrete hard ground is giving way to softer soils all the way into mud... It's hilarious when your hole fills with water!!! And then there's trying to pull the object out of a mudball... HH! -Tom |

If we get to where I'm trying to dig stuff out of mud......it'll be time to send the 6000 out for service. I did some of that when I was younger....and it's just so messy. My detector came with a custom, form fitted "shower cap"....but I don't take it out when it's raining. I did once...which resuted in it's first trip back to the factory.

It's hard to keep things dry here, but you have to.. The best investment I made was a two piece waterproof raincoat for my DFX... HH! -Tom |
