Greensboro Pottery packing shims...
At least that's what I theorize these things to be. I think these were wedged between the crocks when they were strapped to pallets for transportation. I have found several of these at this site, which has fill which is obviously from the old pottery works a few blocks away. Every signal you dig has a piece of crockery in the hole, and these blobs are not uncommon finds. They were made by hand, and are fully fired and glazed. This one even has a little bit of the cobalt blue on it...which is why I kept this one.
The handle section is from a rare Greensboro pottery churn. There's one on eBay right now....asking price 2200 dollars.
I'm not certain as to what the "blobs" were used for, and I think I'll bring home any more whole ones that I find. I've left several in the holes. I'm always open to other suggestions....you know what these things are?
